CBD is one of the most abundant cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. That’s a basic definition but we need to drill down into it a little further for you to get a solid understanding of what it really is.
First, we have to learn what a cannabinoid is and why they’re so important. A cannabinoid is a naturally occurring element that is exclusively found in cannabis. A cannabis plant has plenty of other components, but out of the estimated 480 components, only 66 are exclusive (1). These 66 components are called cannabinoids. I’m sure you’ve heard of the most popular cannabinoid, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol or THC for short. Well CBD is another one that you want to become familiar with.
Cannabinoids are really awesome things because they are masters at working with your body. Your body has tons of receptors all throughout its nervous system that regulate how you feel. The main two receptors that cannabinoids interact with are called CB1 and CB2 receptors. I promise I’m not going to go off into scientific jargon, but I wanted you to know the names of the receptors in case you wanted to research them yourself. These receptors are located in different parts of your body and each one has a different role.
When the receptors are in an area where you feel pain, a cannabinoid can use those receptors to help dissipate the feeling of pain. Scientist have been fascinated by the effects of cannabinoids, especially CBD. More research is coming out every year and we are slowly uncovering the beauty of cannabinoids and our endocannabinoid system.
CBD Is Not Psychoactive
THC is psychoactive, meaning it alters your state of consciousness. The feeling of the altered state of consciousness has been termed, “high.” CBD, on the other hand, doesn’t have a psychoactive effect. Research has shown that it actually may combat the psychoactive effects of THC. Breeders have caught on to this, which is why a lot of weed growers purposely grow strains with low CBD and high THC levels. For the people who just want to get high, CBD is a buzz kill.
Hemp vs Marijuana
The reason CBD is not psychoactive is that it comes from the hemp plant, not the marijuana plant. When most people say cannabis, they’re talking about marijuana. Technically they are correct. Marijuana is a type of cannabis, but it’s not the only type. Hemp is also a type of cannabis, but is a little different than marijuana.
Though these two plants are very similar, the uses couldn’t be further apart. Hemp has been used for thousands of years because it’s arguably the most versatile plant in the world. It has been used for everything from making paper, clothes, shoes, and even a rope from 26,900 BC (2), all the way to extracting CBD for an all natural dietary supplement. The uses for hemp are endless.
To the untrained eye, hemp and marijuana look the same. They have some distinct characteristics that allow professionals and connoisseurs to identify each plant.
